ABOUT US
UNIONIZE!

United Steelworkers
National Director: Ken Neumann
District Six Director: Wayne Fraser
SSM Area Coordinator: Jack Ostroski

Steelworkers in Sault Ste. Marie have a proud history of being in the forefront of change within the labour movement.  We have, for example, established the Group Health Centre in our community, which is home to various medical services that are available not just to our members, but also to the community.  The local ASCU Credit Union grew from the steelworkers' need for financial services for its members.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is built upon the steel industry, and since the early 1950's the Steelworkers have been a part of that steel industry.  The Sault has a population of about 75,000 and grew from a small town to a modern city when Algoma Steel Corporation was established in 1902.  The city is also complemented by the pulp and paper industry, power generation and government services.  Another staple industry in our community is the Algoma Central Corporation, whose railways and steamship lines have serviced the city for the past century.
